Global Warming and its effects on Pakistan

Global warming a threat

Global Warming is basically the unusual increase in the earth’s temperature over the last century due to the effect of Greenhouse gases mainly Carbon dioxide (CO2). These Greenhouse gases are released as fossil fuels are burnt. Due to this reason the average temperature has increased 1 degree Celsius over the ongoing century and can increase further if the emission of these gases continued at the current pace.

Now, what is the basic phenomenon of Global warming?

Earth revolves and rotates around the sun as well around its own axis causing a change of weather according to different time periods. The side of the earth facing the sun has to face hot weather and the side shied away from the sun goes through cold weather. This is a natural process and living things have the ability to evolve themselves according to the needs. During this process, the sun rays arrive at the earth with 30% are reflected back while 70% absorbed by forests, rocks, and atmosphere etc.

This heat from rocks and oceans then transfer back to the atmosphere where it is absorbed by Greenhouse gases such as CO2 and Methane along with water vapors. This heat is then radiated by water vapors and gases in all directions causing warmth of the world which is a basic necessity for the existence of life on planet Earth. Without this phenomenon, the world’s average temperature would have been -15 degree Celsius instead of the normal weather that we are experiencing today.

This presents a good picture of overall scenario however the worrying thing is the extra increase in the temperature due to the emission of a greater amount of Greenhouse gases.  When these Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere it presents a greater chance of absorption of heat into them causing a significant rise in overall temperature after its release back into the atmosphere. The question of significant importance is that why Oxygen and other gases cannot observe heat. I think this may be due to the less vibration in O2 compared to CO2 which has heterogeneous particles bonded with each other.

Reason for Greenhouse effect and Global warming

Some of the reasons can be listed here: Deforestation and cutting of trees, Industrialization without proper planning, Enormous increase in number of vehicles, excessive use of technology with release of heat, increased production of energy (Electricity) from coal and oil with decrease in production from hydro sources, Worldwide competition of heavy giants for capturing markets.

Effects of Global warming

Global warming has drastic effects on the life and especially that of the human life. Some of the effects are to be mentioned here, these include the increased frequency of cyclones due to the melting of glaciers. One side glacier-melting cause cyclones in seas and on the other side decrease the resources for future water consumption. Other effects include a drastic change in weather, increased siltation of dams, water stressed conditions and a major threat to food security.

 Conclusion

Though Pakistan contributes a very small amount of these gases to the atmosphere still we have to be careful in dealing with this issue by going with a proactive and holistic approach.
