Education sector; problems and prospects

Education is one of the basic necessities of the modern man. The constitution of Pakistan realizes this too with clause 25 (A) that makes it obligatory for the state to provide free and quality education to its citizens.  Pakistan has covered many miles in its quest towards quality education but still the destination is far from us both in terms of quality and quantity.

Some of the hindrances that we are facing in our journey towards this goal include:

1. Lack of proper planning
Governments make many policy guidelines for achieving a sustainable growth in the education sector but these efforts have proved to be futile due to poor planning and lack of implementation.

2. Social constraints
People in the rural areas mostly have conservative views and are less prone to societal change. This social behavior makes it almost impossible for women to go out of their homes and to get the education.

3. Gender Gap
Girls in contrast to boys have to face many difficulties in their quest for getting a quality education. Even if they somehow get primary level schooling, they are unable to make to secondary or higher level studies.

4. War on Terror
This is one of the emerging reasons in the recent years. The American war on terror and its fallout in the Pashtun areas of Pakistan made it impossible for girls to get the education. Most of the schools were blown up in the militant-controlled areas and students were forced not to get the education at any level.

5. Funds for Education
Pakistan allocates only 2.4 percent of its Gross Domestic Product to the education sector. About 90 percent of the total allocated budget goes into salaries and other things. Only ten percent reaches to the true education sector.

6. Technical education
Our educational institutes focus mainly on the theory with no attention towards practical experience in the field. This is the cause of the production of a huge pool of graduate students with no technical know-how.

7. Low-quality education
The quality of education standard in our public schools is quite poor.

8. Cost of Education
Due to low quality in public institutes, most parents prefer private schools to public schools. Private schools are taking full advantage of the compulsion of parents by charging them with heavy fees.

9. Poor-trained teachers
Most of the teachers are not properly trained and personally they have no urgency to acquire new knowledge.

10. Curriculum
Our curriculum does not meet the modern standards of education. We are still revolving around the old concepts which have changed due to new research.

11. Class based system
Our education sector has truly divided our society into different sub-groups. Students of the elite institutes don’t have any information about our glorious past and traditions and on the  students in public institutes have been stuck in their own old concepts with no new research.

12. Brain drain
This is one of the major problems of the developing world and of Pakistan in particular. Most of our intelligent minds go to study abroad and never come back causing a huge shortage of excellent minds in our education sector.

13. Implementation of National policy
The government needs to formulate a true reality-based national policy with a will to implement it in letter and spirit. Without implementation, it would be of no use to prevent such policies just to appease international experts and public.

Solutions to the education problems

There are some of the solutions that I will present to the cope up with problems that we are facing in our education sector.

1. Proper Planning
Policy guidelines should be introduced after an intensive discussion and proper planning. All tiers of education should be focused to make an inclusive progress in all education levels. This is not possible without a properly planned roadmap.

2. Defeating social norms
The so-called conservatism can be defeated only if we educate our children properly. The government should educate masses regarding the importance of pursuing the education in Islam and its importance in the future life.

3. Filling gender gap
We should try to fill the gap which has been created by poorly planned policies and conservatism at the rural level.
4. Return of peace
It is government’s duty to provide a safe and secure environment in order to move towards the target of an educated nation. Schools destroyed or damaged by the miscreants should be rebuilt and adequate security should be provided to the schools.

5. Funds for education
Maximum possible funds should be allocated to the education sector by increasing the present 2.4 percent of GDP allocation to at least 5 percent.

6. Technical education
Technical education is the order of the day. the government should build institutes which can provide quality technical education but keeping under a proper balance and check.

7. Improving quality of education
The quality of education should be improved by providing trained teachers and healthy environment to the students.

8. Cost of education
There should be a check and balance on the private schools to compel them to reduce their fees to an affordable level for the poor.

9. Training the teachers
There should be teachers training in every division in order to train teachers according to the latest trends and requirements.

10. Curriculum
The curriculum should be made according to the modern needs keeping both the culture and scientific sides intact.

11. Class based system
There should be a uniform education standard for all institutes across the country otherwise, we will keep on increasing the class gap.

12. Brain drain
The government should provide incentives and impose some check and balances in order to stop this brain drainage.

13. Implementation of National policy
National education policy should be implemented in letter and spirit instead of being limited to mere promises and guidelines.
